A Historic Legacy of Enterprise
The story of RGU begins with Robert Gordon, an Aberdeen merchant and benefactor born in 1668. After amassing a fortune through mercantile ventures in the Baltic, he established Robert Gordon’s Hospital in 1729 to educate the young sons of Aberdeen’s burgesses who were too poor to maintain them at school. The hospital opened its doors in 1750, providing residential education and laying the foundation for what would become a cornerstone of higher education in the north of Scotland.
Over the following centuries, the institution evolved significantly. In 1881, it became Robert Gordon’s College, with a secondary day school and a separate adult education college. The educational work of the Aberdeen Mechanics’ Institute was transferred to the College, and Gray’s School of Science and Art opened its doors. In 1903, the vocational courses were designated as a ‘Central Institution for Specialised Instruction’, marking a pivotal step towards higher education status. The institution became Robert Gordon’s Technical College and later, in 1965, the Robert Gordon’s Institute of Technology (RGIT). Finally, in 1992, RGIT was awarded university status, becoming the City of Aberdeen’s second university.
RGU’s main teaching and learning activities are centered at its state-of-the-art Garthdee campus, situated on the banks of the River Dee. The Best Way to Robert Gordon University certificate online.
