The Institute of Technology Carlow (IT Carlow) stood as one of Ireland’s most respected and dynamic higher education institutions for over five decades. Under his stewardship, the institution navigated significant transitions: from being under the vocational educational committees to achieving independent status through the Regional Technical Colleges Acts in 1993, and subsequently receiving institute of technology status in the late 1990s. Gallagher retired in 2003, leaving behind a transformed institution that had far surpassed its original vision.
On May 1, 2022, IT Carlow was dissolved following its merger with Waterford Institute of Technology to establish South East Technological University (SETU)—Ireland’s fifth technological university. We look forward to another 50 years of knowledge and innovation, of openness and engagement, of ambition and success”.
Though the Institute of Technology Carlow no longer exists as an independent entity, its legacy lives on through the South East Technological University, which continues to serve the region with the same spirit of innovation, accessibility, and community engagement that defined IT Carlow for 52 years.
