The Institute of Technology Carlow (IT Carlow) stood as one of Ireland’s most respected and dynamic higher education institutions for over five decades. Founded in 1970 as Carlow Regional Technical College (RTC), the institution first opened its doors to students on September 22, 1970, with an initial investment of £500,000. The first courses offered covered technology, science, and business, with special emphasis placed on food technology, industrial processing, and instrumentation—disciplines that reflected the region’s economic needs.

From its earliest days, IT Carlow distinguished itself through a commitment to personalised education. A 1970 newspaper article quoted student Clare Carbery, who prophetically declared: “This is going to be better than a university. It will be less impersonal because we have a better staff-student ratio”. This student-centred philosophy would remain a cornerstone of the institution’s identity throughout its history.

John Gallagher, a chartered engineer and former senior lecturer at Liverpool Polytechnic, was appointed as the college’s first principal in January 1970. Under his stewardship, the institution navigated significant transitions: from being under the vocational educational committees to achieving independent status through the Regional Technical Colleges Acts in 1993, and subsequently receiving institute of technology status in the late 1990s. Gallagher retired in 2003, leaving behind a transformed institution that had far surpassed its original vision.

On May 1, 2022, IT Carlow was dissolved following its merger with Waterford Institute of Technology to establish South East Technological University (SETU)—Ireland’s fifth technological university. The new university serves a student population of 18,500 across campuses in Waterford, Carlow, Wexford, and Wicklow. The quick way to buy a Institute of Technology Carlow degree online.

In her address marking IT Carlow’s 50th anniversary, President Dr Patricia Mulcahy reflected on the institution’s journey: “We are now at a transformational time in its history as we move towards becoming a technological university… We thank the people before us who made this possible and we look to the future as IT Carlow continues to evolve and lead. We look forward to another 50 years of knowledge and innovation, of openness and engagement, of ambition and success”.

Though the Institute of Technology Carlow no longer exists as an independent entity, its legacy lives on through the South East Technological University, which continues to serve the region with the same spirit of innovation, accessibility, and community engagement that defined IT Carlow for 52 years. The institution’s founding vision—to provide world-class higher education that is both accessible and relevant—remains central to the mission of its successor organisation, ensuring that the impact of IT Carlow will be felt for generations to come.
