Carleton’s story began in 1942 as Carleton College, born from a vision to provide educational opportunities for young people in Ottawa who were working to support themselves in the wake of the Great Depression. Uniquely among Ontario universities, Carleton was founded as a non-denominational college, supported in part by charitable donations from the local community—a commitment to accessibility that continues to define its character.
The founding meeting took place on June 18, 1942, at Ottawa’s Fairmont Château Laurier, where the Ottawa Association for the Advancement of Learning was established to oversee the College’s operation. Henry Marshall Tory, renowned for founding the University of Alberta and the National Research Council, was appointed Carleton’s first president. In his words: “I learned very early the life lesson that it is people, not buildings, that make up an institution. And if we put our hearts to it we can do something worthwhile.”
The College began with evening courses at Ottawa’s High School of Commerce, offering introductory university subjects with a special focus on public administration. By 1945, day classes commenced, and the first degrees were awarded in 1946 in journalism and public administration—fields that remain cornerstones of Carleton’s academic excellence.
