The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) stands as the world’s largest and most influential professional body for construction management and leadership. The CIOB’s origins date back to 6 March 1834, when a group of 18 eminent Master Builders, including Sir Samuel Morton-Peto—who began his career as an apprentice joiner and went on to work on Nelson’s Column and the Houses of Parliament—established the Builders’ Society in a coffee house on Ludgate Hill, London. Their initial concerns centred on contract conditions and impending strikes by construction workers, reflecting the practical challenges facing the industry at the time.
In 1884, the society was incorporated under the Companies Act as The Institute of Builders, with a stated purpose “to promote excellence in the construction of buildings and just and honourable practice in the conduct of business”. Following substantial development, particularly in the post-Second World War era, the institute changed its name to The Institute of Building in 1965 and registered as an educational charity in 1970.
A landmark moment arrived on 25 September 1980, when the institute was granted a Royal Charter, achieving its current name: The Chartered Institute of Building. This Royal Charter status, a prestigious recognition in the United Kingdom, formally established the CIOB’s objectives: promoting for the public benefit the science and practice of building and construction, and advancing public education in these fields through research and publication.
The CIOB is a full member of the Construction Industry Council and was a founder member of the Building Industry Council (now the Construction Industry Council) in 1988, alongside the CIBSE, IStructE, RIBA, and RICS. The institute hosts awards ceremonies that celebrate excellence in construction, such as the annual CIOB Ireland Awards, which recognise individuals and teams making significant impacts in the sector.
