The university was reorganized in 1863, and it was the generosity of George Munro, a wealthy publisher from New York with Nova Scotian roots, that saved the university from potential closure in the late 19th century. His substantial donations endowed professorships and bursaries, a legacy that is still celebrated today with George Munro Day. In 1885, Margaret Florence Newcombe became the first woman to graduate from Dalhousie, and in 1896, James Robinson Johnston became its first Black law graduate, marking early steps toward inclusivity.
