Dalhousie University degree, Dalhousie University diploma, Dalhousie University certificate. Located in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on the country’s breathtaking East Coast, Dalhousie has evolved over two centuries from a small college into a leading research-intensive university with a global reach. Today, it is recognized as a member of the U15, a prestigious group representing Canada’s top research universities.

Dalhousie’s origins are rooted in a forward-thinking vision. The university was established by George Ramsay, the ninth Earl of Dalhousie and Nova Scotia’s Lieutenant-Governor, who aspired to create a non-denominational college open to all, regardless of class or creed. This was a radical concept at a time when most institutions were affiliated with a single religious denomination. The initial funds for the college came from a unique source: customs duties collected by the British Royal Navy from the port of Castine, Maine, during the War of 1812.

Despite this auspicious start, the institution’s early years were marked by struggle. It was not until 1838 that the first classes were held, and for many years, it operated only intermittently. The university was reorganized in 1863, and it was the generosity of George Munro, a wealthy publisher from New York with Nova Scotian roots, that saved the university from potential closure in the late 19th century. His substantial donations endowed professorships and bursaries, a legacy that is still celebrated today with George Munro Day. In 1885, Margaret Florence Newcombe became the first woman to graduate from Dalhousie, and in 1896, James Robinson Johnston became its first Black law graduate, marking early steps toward inclusivity.
