Durham College opened its doors on September 18, 1967, in just 16 portable classrooms with 205 students and 14 staff members. The first academic calendar offered courses in applied arts, business, and technology—a foundation that continues to shape the institution today. Over five decades, the college has flourished, expanding its program offerings, facilities, and student body. By 2009, enrolment exceeded 7,100 full-time students; today, DC welcomes more than 13,000 students pursuing credentials across 145+ market-driven programs, including six honours bachelor’s degrees and nine apprenticeship programs.
The college’s growth has been marked by strategic expansions. In 1993, DC established its Whitby campus in a former Cadbury chocolate factory, transforming it into a hub for skilled trades and apprenticeship training. More recently, 2022 saw the completion of the 60,000-square-foot Ontario Power Generation Centre for Skilled Trades and Technology, a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to industrial trades training. The 2023 opening of the Centre for Innovation and Research (CIR) further centralized DC’s applied research presence, housing four of its six research centres.
Students can participate in numerous extracurricular activities. The Justice and Emergency Services programs host the annual Justice Games, a friendly competition that builds teamwork and school spirit. Academic Welcome Week events, including movie nights, corn roasts, and the Campus Cup soccer rivalry, help new students connect and build community. The First Peoples Indigenous Centre leads initiatives such as the REDress Campus Campaign, raising awareness about Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirited People (MMIWG2S).
