Trent University stands as one of Canada’s most distinguished undergraduate institutions, renowned for its commitment to academic excellence, transformative research, and community engagement. Founded in 1964, the university emerged from a community-driven vision that began in 1957 when the people of Peterborough, Ontario, through public discussion, decided they wanted to establish a post-secondary educational institution in their city. Mayor Colonel John Dewart established a Committee on Higher Education, bringing together representatives from business, industry, religion, education, and women’s interests to study the possibility.
On September 21, 1960, the committee became the Board of Directors of Trent College Limited, incorporated for preliminary planning purposes. In May 1962, following the recommendation of the Provincial Government’s Advisory Committee on University Affairs, the Ontario Government announced its support for founding Trent University. The Trent University Act was passed by the Legislature, establishing the Board of Governors and the Senate, and conferring upon Trent the full and traditional powers and responsibilities of a university.
The university’s founding president was Dean Thomas H. B. Symons of the University of Toronto, who had served as chair of the academic planning committee. In the fall of 1964, Trent welcomed its first students, with the campus initially consisting of three refurbished buildings in central Peterborough: Rubidge Hall, Catharine Parr Traill College for women, and Peter Robinson College for men. Governor General Georges Vanier officially opened Trent University in 1964, with approximately 100 students attending that year.
