Established through an Act of State Parliament in 1909, The University of Queensland was officially founded on April 16, 1910, making it the first university in the state. Teaching began in 1911 at Old Government House in Brisbane, with just three faculties—Arts, Science, and Engineering—and 83 students, including 23 women. The University’s founders envisioned a “people’s university” created to broaden opportunity, advance knowledge, and strengthen communities—a mission that continues to guide the institution today.

After rapid expansion following World War I, the University outgrew its inner-city location. In 1926, Dr James O’Neil Mayne and his sister Mary Emelia Mayne provided funds to purchase the St Lucia site, where the main campus now stands. Construction began in 1937, and during World War II, the first completed building served as the advanced headquarters for Allied Land Forces in the South West Pacific.

Through The Queensland Commitment, UQ is reducing barriers to education and delivering social benefits to communities across the state.

With its stunning campuses, world-class research, and steadfast commitment to teaching excellence, The University of Queensland offers students an unparalleled opportunity to learn from leaders in their fields, contribute to meaningful discoveries, and build a better future for communities in Queensland and around the world.
