The origins of Stellenbosch University date back to the 17th century, with regular school education established in the town in 1685. Higher education began with the founding of the Theological Seminary of the Dutch Reformed Church in 1859, followed by the establishment of the Stellenbosch Gymnasium in 1866. In 1874, the Arts Department was founded, which by 1881 had become Stellenbosch College, later renamed Victoria College in 1887 in honour of Queen Victoria’s golden jubilee.
A pivotal moment arrived in 1916 with the adoption of the University Act by the Union of South Africa Parliament, paving the way for the establishment of a university. Thanks to a £100,000 donation from local benefactor Mr Jan Marais of Coetzenburg, Victoria College became Stellenbosch University on 2 April 1918. Today, Marais’ statue stands on the Red Square on mid-campus, while his Victorian residence houses Maties Sport.
